February/March 2012

Our Mission:  Enable each child to reach maximum potential by providing residents with a safe environment, a range of creative educational, developmental and recreational programs, nurturing individuality, character and community while preparing each child for onward challenges and success, whether they involve university education, vocational training, or gainful employment.

Dear Friends,
Aziza’s Place celebrated its fifth anniversary on February 14th with all of AP’s resident children energetically celebrating the occasion, beginning in the afternoon and continuing well into the evening.  In typical AP style,  music, games and plenty of food to share were all part of the festivities!  The past five years have been a period of achievement and growth for Aziza’s Place residents, all of whom have found ways to confidentially express their creativity and nurture their talents through AP programs and activities.
In this Courtyard newsletter we introduce 17-year old Rotha who authored the second article describing how AP residents are taking on new responsibility and leadership by taking part in AP staff meetings.  We also highlight the Music Program which is a creative outlet for many of the AP residents who are delighted to continue learning in 2012.
This month the AP staff continued their learning by beginning a new training program, designed specifically for their needs as caregivers.  The intensive training course is an in-depth expansion of previous group training activities which aim to advance each individual staff member and the group as a collective team.
Finally, we introduce and thank Lauren Refaat for her valuable work as a volunteer over the past two months and send our grateful thanks to Mom's Against Poverty (MAP) for their continued support and investment, bettering the lives of the Aziza's Place children and families through funding support for 2012.  Please read on for more detail!

Yours Gratefully,
Aziza's Place

Aziza's Place Celebrates Fifth Year Anniversary

AP children, friends and staff singing Happy 5th
Birthday Aziza's Place!
Walking in to Aziza's Place on Tuesday afternoon, February 14th, guests were greeted with balloons, tinsel, food, a magnificent cake display, AP residents and their friends playing games, competitions, face-painting, dancing and partying. The day was one of celebration, starting with the children and staff streaming up bright balloons and decorations.  From 3pm, friends of AP residents began arriving.  Aziza’s Place fifth birthday was a special event the children wanted to share with their friends.
After an afternoon of games and dancing, everyone joined together for a delicious feast. After singing the birthday song and blowing out the candles, the cake was cut!  See photos on the AP Facebook page.  Happy 5th Birthday Aziza’s Place!

AP Residents Participate in Staff Meetings - Written by Von Rotha

Rotha writes about AP residents participating
in staff meetings.
AP has a new program which provides the older kids opportunities to discuss and join one staff meeting per month.
Before the meeting day, we all gathered together and chose a representative.  I was the first person chosen to represent all the kids at the staff meeting.  After talking about our desires, we talked about our needs and problems that we want to find a solution for in the meeting.
After the meeting finished, the kids came together again and I informed them of everything I discussed with the staff.
The meeting made me feel more confident to share my thoughts and have strong communication with all the staff.  It especially taught me to be a leader among the kids.

AP Residents Inspired Through Music

AP residents perform, playing traditional Khmer
music with unique Cambodian musical instruments.
In this Courtyard Newsletter we celebrate the creativity of the AP residents in their study of Music.  In 2011 all AP residents participated in the study of traditional Khmer music.  The children learned the fundamentals of reading music and playing various Cambodian instruments. They put their learning to the test with performances to audiences at events with other local NGO’s and at some AP Family Nights in front of their family and friends.
This year the Music classes will be smaller.  Now that each resident has had the opportunity to learn the basics, nine of the AP residents have been inspired and committed to developing their music learning further.  These classes will be more focused as the residents learn intricate techniques of Cambodia’s ancient traditional Khmer music – a unique style of music taught to very few people in Cambodia, alongside some modern techniques as well.
The music program is taught by Mr. Sinat Nhok who works with Cambodian Living Arts, an organisation with a mission to support the revival of Cambodian traditional art forms and to inspire contemporary artistic expression.  He has unique talent and skill in the training of classical Khmer wedding music and motivates the Aziza’s Place residents to develop their creative musical talents, to share his dream to keep traditional Cambodian music alive and for this music to be in the hearts of Cambodian people for future generations.
Once again we thank Peter Mayer and April Johnson who raised funds through their network of friends to establish and continue the Music program, and to Kirsten Caufield whose support has enabled the AP music program to continue into 2012.

Intensive Training Course Expands AP Staff Capacity

This month a new round of staff training commenced for the Staff at Aziza's Place, tailored to their needs and expanding on themes they all explored during an intensive training course in early 2011.  The aim of this follow-up program is for Aziza’s Place staff to further develop their competency as effective caregivers – responding to the needs of the children by developing their own self-awareness, using effective communication and relationship-building skills with the children, understanding child development, and implementing effective parenting skills and behavior management techniques.  The first two of the six full training days were held in February with the remaining sessions planned for March and April.
The course is led by Seoung Sothearwat and Yim Sotheary who are both experienced professionals in the area of counseling, training caregivers, and leading team building and group learning activities.  They have worked closely with the Aziza's Place residents and staff for the past eighteen months through previous training programs and through individual and group sessions with the children.  They therefore have an intimate knowledge of the vision and purpose of Aziza's Place, and have brought together their unique perspective to develop a targeted and relevant training program for the Aziza’s Place staff.
The first two sessions were incredibly insightful and practical, with written activities, visual expression, group participation activities, sharing of individual experiences, relating to the context of Aziza’s Place, all creating a space of valuable group learning and team building.  This has created a strong platform for continued learning as the staff complete the training program in the next two months.  We thank Sothearwat and Sotheary for their role in encouraging and enhancing the capacity of the AP staff as we focus on providing a healthy and positive environment for the children of Aziza’s Place.

Thank You Lauren! - Volunteering at Aziza's Place

Lauren uses her creative talent face-painting
Lina during AP's 5th Birthday celebrations.
Everyone at Aziza’s Place has been enjoying the energy and creativity of volunteer Lauren Refaat since her arrival at the end of December 2011.  Lauren is from Egypt and most recently from London.  We are excited to hear that she will spend the next few months volunteering at Aziza’s Place as she has quickly become part of the AP family.  Lauren teaches English and Computer classes for the AP staff during the week, and enjoys spending time with the children in the evenings by giving extra tutoring support during their homework sessions.  She is also utilising her marketing experience by giving advice for updating the AP website.  As a good friend of co-founder Amjad Ghori, Lauren was delighted to take up his suggestion to spend time at Aziza’s Place.  We thank her for her exuberance and insights as she becomes a supporting member of the AP team.

Thank You

Sreyphea, Sreynat and Sreymach enjoying their time
with Ingrid during her visit to Aziza's Place.
Special thanks to Moms Against Poverty (MAP) for their dedicated support of Aziza's Place.  MAP are supporting Aziza’s Place with a generous funding grant for 2012, contributing towards our daily operation costs, education programs, and also importantly providing Accident and Hospital/Surgery Health Insurance cover for the AP children and staff in 2012.   We are proud to continue partnering with MAP, whose ongoing support has made a real difference in enabling the sustainability of our education programs and operations in the past five years.  Thank you MAP once again, for your dedication and commitment to the children and families of Aziza's Place!

Many thanks to Ingrid Weston who sponsored a New Year's Eve dinner celebration and treated the AP residents and staff to a day of swimming at the Phnom Penh Sports Club during her visit in December/January.
